Tommy Gate recently announced the release of an all-new 3,000lb capacity, high-cycle railgate for stake and van bodies.

An extension of Tommy Gate’s pre-existing product line of railgates, this new lift is the first Tommy Gate has produced at the 3,000lb capacity level.

Tommy Gate’s engineers specifically designed the 3,000lb railgate for applications performing high numbers of lifting cycles during daily use. These "high-cycle" requirements have called for the inclusion of a number of quality components such as machined steel rollers, dual-sealed ball bearings, hardenedsteel pulleys, and composite bushings. Incorporating these materials has created a steadier lifting action and reduced maintenance.

Okay, we're having a bit of fun with the title, but if you look at the first picture, maybe you'll see what we're talking about! Those amber lights at the top of the dump body do look a lot like frog eyes.

Here is a 2-3 yard capacity Rugby Steel Dump Body with Fold-Down Sides so it can be off loaded from the side, or used as a flatbed from time to time and loaded with a forklift. It has two underbed boxes and side boards and is painted white to match the truck. Fire & Rescue Style Body

This is a custom SuperStructure 9' Service Body manufactured by Harbor Truck Bodies, of Brea, CA for their customer Mono County Search and Rescue. This is a great looking, and very functional body with room for lots of things.

This body has horizontal compartments on both sides, where the horizontal compartment normally over the wheels only is extended to the end of the body to allow the carrying of longer tools and items that would not normally fit in any of the service body compartments. The good news about that is that it is typically a "no charge" option. Those huge upper compartments can carry some really large items by removing the shelf. Then there are those awesome light to light up the whole area on all three sides of the body. And, last, there is the whole lockable area in the rear which will take care of what won't fit in the compartments. All that mounted on a Ford Crew Cab F450, makes for a awesome package.

One Sweet Welder Body

What a sweet rig this is! Super nice Ford Crew Cab uplevel truck and then there is this black beauty of a body. . . but not just a plain old body, this one has some twists.

How many welders do you see rolling around in rigs like this? Yet that's what this ends up being, or at least functioning with the custom space for the welder machine. Then, notice that it has a closed top on the streetside where the welder opening is and an open top lid on the curbside. This also has tie downs in the floor and a spray on bedliner to make it so durable. But, it look so good just looking at it! We'll just pull up some lounge chairs, pass around some brewskies and admire this beauty!

Most Useful Flatbed Is Very Versatile

It is very common to have one underbed box mounted near the cab on a flatbed, but take a look at this approach. Here is a series of underbed boxes of varying sizes that are connected with a wheel skirt insert making it look like it is not a flatbed at all, but something else. In this case, the bed is a 14' stakebed from Harbor Truck Bodies in Brea, CA. Just think of all the stuff you can put in all those compartments which are 18" deep! Then do it again on the other side. What a great way to be able to carry things that are kept out of sight and out of the weather while doing the things you need to do with the stakebed. A great combination!

Just A Bit Of Protected Space Makes All The Difference

Some clients need to carry some larger items to and from the job site and keep it out of sight and safe as well as keeping the weather from damaging the equipment. The truck above is a great solution in a compact size and yet carries so much.

This is a Ford single rear wheel regular cab chassis with a 9' Harbor service body, with rack and hitch. The twist here is the raised cargo bed enclosure that offers the barn style doors on the back, and a 3-piece sliding roof that will open approximately two thirds of the bed area. This area is big enough for air conditioning units and many other larger items that need to be transported.

Transverse Compartment Adds Value

This is a special Transverse Compartment in the front compartment of an 11' Harbor Service Body. In this case the space is opened up to go across the bed are to the back of the opposite compartment on the other side of the service body. You could also go all the way through if that was needed. Notice how the shelf that lines up with the floor is a permanent steel shelf welded in place and the additional shelves are removable and movable.

The value of the Transverse Compartment is to give more space that can be locked and secured. You lose a bit of the front of the cargo area, but we think you'll agree that it is a very worthy trade-off. This is not an expensive option and Harbor does them all the time in various ways on a number of Harbor products. This is just one of the many modification we can make to our standard products inexpensively to make them more useful for your business.

Some like them plain and some like them to Bling! Here we captured a truck in final stages being built for Vortex Doors by Harbor Truck Bodies in Brea, CA. They have been buying trucks just like this for a lot of years and their trucks stand out of the crowd, for sure.

First off, they are low pro bodies, so the top of the service body lids is at about the bottom of the rear window, in this case it is 34" high. This is a hard working truck that has a rear (most seem to be in the front) compartment for short welder bottles and the compartment is vented and set up for this task (See it in action on the Vortex website at www.vortexdoors.com). The rack has RackStraps on both sides. Then, a stainless steel vise bracket to the back of the right compartment.

Now we come to the bling! Polished aluminum treadplate is attached to the standard stainless steel lids, and the cargo compartment and backwrappers are covered in the same shiny treadplate. Add to this an unusual, but gorgeous chrome rear bumper and you have one sweet looking truck. Of course, we cannot forget the silver metallic base coat, clear coat paint job! It's a knockout! I'm sure their strategy was more protection from scratched paint and rust, but the bling has other obvious benefits! Dual Raised Front Compartments Add So Much Storage

Sometimes we need more space and adding raised front compartments can be just the thing. In this case, there are two 60" raised front compartments. Often, we call this a welder body and the welder body comes standard with one raised compartment that is vented and typically used for gas bottle storage. This one does not have the vents and so is used for normal storage with shelving. Based on the design, you can carry some pretty large things or a bunch of parts for offsite jobs, etc.

In addition, this one also has a rear window protector built in and has a Tommy Gate liftgate to make lifting larger or heavier items easily into or out of the bed area. You can also add a rack, master lock system, vise bracket and much more to personalize it for your needs.

Another Unique Welder Body from Harbor Truck Bodies

Here's another unique Welder Body that Harbor Truck Bodies just created. It seems that there's no such thing as a standard Welder Body because every welder want something different. Well, here's a 9' Low Pro 34" Open Top Service Body with Stainless Steel lids and with slightly raised front compartments to the standard height of 40" closed compartment style.

This also has a small sized transverse compartment with two compartments for tall gas bottles in storage, while in the main front compartment are bottle brackets and rings for short gas bottles. This also has the rear compartment cut off and an 18" work platform with V-groove on the back plus the standard 8" step bumper.

This is all mounted on a new Dodge 3500 regular cab chassis and makes for a very clean looking rig.

Storage and Space In A Small Package

Here's a single rear wheel extended cab truck with a 9' flatbed with a unique setup of tool boxes. The underbody box is common enough, but the upper bed boxes are interesting. These are underbed boxes mounted on top and the bottom set have fold-down doors like the underbed box does and the boxes on top have been flipped to open upward due to the height to make it easy to use. Great idea! Then we have some short solid contractor style gates around the back to help keep loads on the flatbed section in place.

Rack Options At No Charge

Here's a couple shots from the lot of Larry Geweke Ford in Yuba City, CA so we can show off the difference between the tapered-leg rack and the straight-leg rack. In this case, these are forklift loadable racks mounted on single rear wheel 9' Harbor Service Bodies with standard Stainless Steel Open Top Lids.

Some people need the widest space possible to carry more material, or larger items and for them, the straight-leg rack is the way to go. The only issue is you need to pay attention getting in and out of the cab for tall people. This rack makes an excellent use of the width of the body to give maximum size capacity.

The tapered-leg rack is mounted in the same place on the body, but tapers in to give it a sleeker appearance and the rack section does not hang over the door on the cab, so it may be easier to get in and out. Many also think it looks cleaner and flows more with the lines of the truck.

Great Looking 8' Service Body with Raised Cargo Bed Enclosure

This is a 9' Service Body on an uplevel Ford 56"CA Box Delete Chassis. Looks wonderful. The interesting part to show on this is how nicely this shows off the advantage of the horizontal series, which it a no charge option. This makes the horizontal box over the wheels extend to the end of the body and instead of a vertical compartment in the rear, it has a smaller square box below. This option allows a wide variety of tools, parts and other gear to fit in that long horizontal box. It's a great option.

The other interesting thing is that it has a Raised Cargo Bed Enclosure, but this one has a permanent top instead of the typical roll top or sliding roof. Notice the light on the inside roof and also how closely the rack fits to the top. It also has a conduit box mounted in the center which is more often mounted on one side rather than in the center.

There are some other minor options, like the Stainless Steel Vise Bracket, but all in all, this is one sweet looking truck!

Here's some photos of a nice flatbed with steel fold-down sides and swing-away rear gate system. This one was specially built for Mark Christopher Chevrolet. It also has a non-forklift loadable rack. Notice the center post when the two sides are folded down. That post is easily removed just by lifting it out, so this unit can easily be loaded from the side manually or with a forklift.

Here's a body that was nearing completion when the photos were taken. This is a Harbor 11' TradeMaster Service Body or WeldMaster Body. It could also be called a ComboMaster body since it has the rear platforom extension. It has several options of note: This unit has 56" compartments except the front compartments are 60" tall. The front compartments are set up for welder bottles with bottle brackets and rings and vented doors. Notice that the horizontal compartment over the wheel wells is now a vertical compartment and has much more space than usual. This unit also sports an 19" Floor Extension for a work platform to get some quick jobs done in the field, along with a HD Material Rack. All this was mounted on a Ford Super Duty 450/550 chassis.

There's a whole lot of rack goin' on here! Seems overpowering for a smaller truck, but is for specific uses that make sense for this business. Notice the taller sides, stop in front of rack but not all the way forward. Notice that it is designed to have cargo on both sides yet leave the center area accessible to the cargo area. Notice also the forward structural support posts. Notice the double supports where attached to the body and also notice the width of the rack assembly for maximum space available. Of course, the whole thing is bolted and thereby removable just in case they need some major engine work where the cab is removed on the Ford this package rests on. Last, notice the spare tire mounted in the bed area.

A Little Change Can Offer A Big Difference

This is a little twist on a combo body from Harbor Truck Bodies in Brea, CA. Harbor calls this the ComboMaster Body and the twists are these:

This unit has a horizontal series on the curbside and vertical series on the streetside. It is very unusual to see a horizontal series on a combo body--matter of fact, this is the first I have seen in all the years I have been around bodies. Horizontal series means that the horizontal compartment extends beyond the normal place just over the wheel well and usually it extends to the end of the body to the rear and then instead of having a vertical door, there is a small square door and compartment.

In the case of the combo body, there is no rear vertical compartment, so in this case the horizontal compartment is extended through the second vertical compartment to the front and the smaller square compartment below. Very interesting mix on compartments. This style allows for longer tools and other objects to be stored in the much longer horizontal compartment.

The other twist which has become more common as time moves forward is the fold-down gates and then the spray-on liner has become very popular too. This particular body also has the Master Lock System, Stainless Steel Open Top Lids and a Forklift Loadable Rack which is bolted, not welded on and has no posts at the rear allowing full use of the work area which makes the combo such a popular unit.

This is a new lock cylinder of high quality components manufactured by Bolt Locks, part of Strattec. These locks are also available in padlock form and the video below shows how those operate. What makes this body interesting is the rear platform extension with the unique fold down, lockable step and rather than have little doors outside, this platform has a full-length lid that opens making that storage space so useful and more effective. On the inside is special LED lighting including in the compartment areas. Notice the sliding mesh screens on the inside which are lockable and keep things where they need to be. Low Pro Red Dually Service Body

I ran across this shot and just had to add it to the blog. I think it is a 2000 Ford 56" CA box delete chassis with a Harbor 9' Low Pro Service Body. This unit has a 2-pc cargo bed enclosure, master lock system, tapered material rack (used to be 1"x2" tubing like this, but now most are 2"x2" or 2"x3"), aluminum treadbrite lid covers, stainless steel vise bracket, and more. The chassis is an XLT uplevel trim with nice Alcoa aluminum wheels from the factory.

It is so rare to see low pro service bodies in dealer inventory and especially a dually low pro, but I gotta say that this truck is awesome! I think it works extremely well. It is also very nice to be something other than white. Here's to more low pro bodies!

Custom Welder/Crane Body

Welder Bodies come in so many different modifications, that almost any body could be a "Welder Body." Here's yet another way. This one is an 11' Harbor Service Body with 56" high compartments. It is mounted on a 108" CA chassis so that allows 2' of space in front of the body for the Miller Trailblazer welding machine. As you can see, this welder is mounted on a sliding tray which extends all the way out from the body and supports the weight nicely.

Mounted on the top right is a Venturo ET25KX crane with crane rest and outrigger package mounted as shown in the last photo. Just think of all the stuff we can put in this wonderful set of closets. In addition, this unit has the cargo bed enclosure which keeps the things in the center compartment out of the weather, and more importantly, out of sight.

Here's a picture of a plumber style body on a single rear wheel cutaway chassis. This one is the standard tall height with 74" inside height so you can stand up straight and stop bumping your head in there. The service body cabinets must not be enough, nor the cavernous interior, so they wanted a rack on top and the only way to deal with that is with the tried and true ladder--this one permanently attached. Now, they can get the job done and make use of all that space on top of the body.

Low Pro On Super Cab with Tommy Gate Plus Toys

Here is a few shots of a job that Harbor Truck Bodies just finished for the Monte Vista Water District in Montclair, CA. It is a bit unique in that it is a low profile service body (34") with standard Stainless Steel open top lids and it has a Tommygate liftgate. In addition to this combination, there are a number of additions that are quite useful and effective. There is a light strip at the top of the cab for working in harm's way, a receiver hitch, a non-forklift loadable rack with a strobe light and two outdoor lamps for night work. The rack also has a compartment made of partially expanded metal. Notice also the HD tie downs in the floor of the bed area and unique tie down anchors on the top of the body. All that beauty is mounted on the new Ford Super Cab single rear wheel chassis.

More Space With Transverse Compartment and DRAWER!

Here is a shot of a transverse compartment with a slide out drawer. This type of compartment is so useful in many ways for many different businesses.

The shot that isn't here is a photo from the rear looking at the bed area. If it were here, you would see that since the front compartment goes all the way through the body, you lose exactly the width of the compartment in bed area, but that is a very easy trade-off in my thinking. It keeps things from getting too far forward as well so you can reach them. What would also be interesting would be a cargo bed enclosure and then you can hide the things in the back.

This particular transverse compartment goes from one side through the body to the backside of the compartment on the opposite side of the body, so the drawer only slides out one way. This makes for a nice long drawer and you still have the original functional compartment on the other side. It is available all the way through the body and have the drawer go out either side at any time and that would be pretty useful too. In this case, the long drawer comes out on the safer curbside of the truck rather than the streetside. It is probably the best scenario for that reason.

This is an 8' unit on an uplevel GM chassis and also has two different design ladder racks installed. Here's the Harbor Highliner Service Body. This body is essentially a standard height closed top service body with a set of boxes added on top with upward opening doors to make it easy to access that additional storage. This gives plenty of room in the lower compartments for larger items and a huge amount of space for smaller items above.

The Highliner body here is shown on a tilt-cab truck without a rack and is also available on conventional chassis models with or without a rack. In addition, other accessories are still available such as the Harbor Master Locking System, Stainless Steel Vise Bracket, HD Slide-out drawers, and more.
